NTI Consulting & Design Services for Security Systems

NTI consulting and design services for security systems includes various security systems. The complete list of security related systems that use a low voltage power source is longer than these few, but for 95% of the projects on which we work we are working on one or more of the following security systems.

NTI’s suite of services includes budgeting & systems consultation, design expertise, design documentation via AutoCAD or Revit, construction administration services, and project management services.

CCTV

When NTI is engaged for a project where the security is in our scope, closed circuit television (CCTV) is almost always in NTI’s scope of work.  The required infrastructure for  the video surveillance and the required types of cameras that fit the objective are included in NTI’s design documentation.

Access Control

The access control systems that are within NTI’s scope of work can be defined as the systems that enable management of who is authorized to access a  campus, building or selected interior spaces.   Our scope therefore includes the structured cabling to all points of entry to any building, and to specific areas where  access is limited to a selected group.  Like the CCTV design, NTI’s scope of work most often includes access control systems which may include a numeric  keypad, fingerprint access or even a retinal scan.  Most often NTI designs a  key card access system.  If desired, the access  can be controlled from a nearby location within a facility, or  it may employ an IoT solution for allowing access from a more distant location.

Monitoring

When NTI designs the security system, there is most often a security command station or console included in the design.  Depending on the size of the security zone (small building, multiple buildings, a campus),  monitoring requirements vary widely.  The security console might be as simple as a small space to review the passively captured video record from the collective cameras and/or a time stamped chronological record of access by whom at any given entry point.   Or, if an active system is designed for a campus, the monitoring station may be a large security command station suitable for active human monitoring. This type of command station includes multiple screens displaying the different access points to/from the buildings, and other areas covered by CCTV throughout the campus.  And if desired, off premise monitoring can be part of the design.  Off-premise monitoring might be an alternative for  active monitoring during business hours, or as an after hours security policy as part of a 24/7 security policy.

Intrusion Detection

NTI also provides consulting, design and documentation services for intrusion detection systems.  These systems include:

Door/Window Contact Alarms

Simply stated a door or window contact alarm will notify someone when the door  or window is opened.  These systems most often rely on using magnetic sensors that  detect when the magnetic field breaks. Once the sensor detects the break, the sensor transmits the intrusion to an alarm panel, which then alerts you.   Door contact alarms are common in NTI’s design scope across all industries.

Duress Alarm

Duress alarms (also known as a Panic Button) are known to most as the button the teller at the bank presses when a robber is in front of the teller. However, they are used in many other ways. There is often a duress alarm at the front desk of a hotel, a corporate facility, senior living development  or government building.  In  fitness centers, a duress alarm is a safety precaution.  Duress alarms are often designed for a  pool area.  Medical facilities  employ them for security as well as precaution for their patients.   And it is typical to have a duress alarm in the  human resources department.

Motion Detection

Motion detection alarms are not as common as the above systems because they are used in specific situations, such as overnight security where that is perceived to be important.

For example: NTI was the technology consultant for  a new City Hall project that had ground floor windows.  The security design therefore included motion detection and glass breakage alarms on the doors and ground floor windows to protect the facility after hours.  The on-site security command center was “switched” to the local police station when the city hall security personnel left at the end of the business day.

NTI’s design team is led by our principals and/or subject matter specialists to address each project’s unique vision.  They lead our designers and drafting professionals assigned to each project. As students of the industry, each principal, specialist and designer can be both teacher and student insofar as we help educate each other with the objective of providing a best in class design each and every time.
