Let’s start with a definition of the Internet of Things—this one from Margaret Rouse of whatis.com.
“The internet of things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals, or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.”
A far more straightforward way to say it is: We can send or receive information from just about anything, from anywhere, to just about anything, and to anywhere. It is a daunting thought to consider the possibilities. The uses of IoT are endless.
We reviewed a half dozen videos and selected this one as an excellent 3-minute overview with good visuals.
The commercial benefits of IoT include building management. It can be a specific solution, such as PoE Low Voltage lighting. It is also the basis for smart buildings.
Whether we realize it or not, commercial buildings have a wealth of knowledge housed inside their walls. Still, most are not sharing that information with anyone. Wikipedia defines building automation as, “The automatic centralized control of a building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning, lighting and other systems through a building management system or building automation system (BAS). The objectives of building automation are improved occupant comfort, efficient operation of building systems, reduction in energy consumption and operating costs, and improved life cycle of utilities”. IoT allows each device and unit to be controlled remotely, either within the building or from an out-of-state location.
